Yo Yo Dieting - The effect on your metabolism
Yo Yo Dieting
As mentioned in my other diet reviews, the effect of yo yo dieting aren’t clear when you begin your new diet. The yo yo effect consists of :
- Your metabolism being slowed down significantly from lowered calorie intake from your new diet.
- When you cease your diet, your slowed metabolism won’t be able to adjust fast enough to match the high calorie intake.
- Your muscle mass and tissue will be processed as your body goes into a ’starvation’ mode from lack of calories.
It might sound irrelivent to people uninterested in gaining muscle, but it also slows your metabolism even more.
- To counter this muscle loss phase, increased exercise should coincide.
- Does yo yo dieting permanently damage or alter your metabolism? No - although it may be effected at the time of your crash diet / low calorie diet, metabolism speed is a changeable and reversible process.
- The ‘yo yo’ doesn’t return to the same state it was. Every cycle, more fat will be stored on your body than when you began the diet.
- Basically, yo yo dieting is the term used to describe weight cycling diets that follow the pattern of rapid weight loss, followed by rapid weight gain due to metabolism manipulation working against you. It is unpleasant since self-esteem and psychological problems often ensue to people who attempt losing weight through these ‘yo-yo diets.’
