Diet Soda and Dieting - The health risks and concerns

Diet Soda and Dieting

A growing trend in today’s society is thinking drinking diet brands of soda will help you maintain, or lose weight. While diet soda itself is low calorie and carbohydrates, there are many side effects of soda that many people don’t take account for. The key one would be:

  • The sweet taste invokes cravings for calories studies have proposed, usually something savoury or fatty. Although resistible, people don’t realize they are eating more.
  • On the other hand, people may realize they are eating more, but think that drinking calorie/carb free soda is countering it.

Recent studies such as one presented at the Annual Diabetes Conference in the U.S found:

  • 31% increased chance of obesity for up to 1 soda consumed each day.
  • 46% increased chance of obesity for up to 2 soda’s consumed each day.

The important thing to note however, is that the test didn’t find that the bad effects of soda were obesity, but that there was a link from drinking soda and obesity. People become over-confident in their diet plan using soda and over-consume. Diet soda and dieting just ends up being another fad diet really. More and more teens dieting turn to diet cokes more and more these days without realizing the holes in it.
