With more and more adolescents trying to maintain shape, figure and fitness, extreme dieting has become a popular method of dieting for teens, particularly low calorie fad diets.
Basically, safe dieting for teens consists of eating a lot of varied foods and exercising. Adolescents can get away with extra calorie intake as they’re bodies are growing and developing.
But for those who’ve fallen behind, there’s no easy weight loss for teens available. A diet plan for teens would be, simply put, exercise and moderation.
When I was 17 I ate Maccas almost every day, drank a fair bit and was addicted to Twisties. It would’ve been a challenge to put on weight for me even if I wanted to - I played baseball, played cricket with friends almost everyday and was constantly active doing housework and running around the neighbourhood.
Following a fad, extreme teenage dieting often leads to the infamous yo yo effect: Something you’d want to avoid at all costs.
Some articles and reviews claim that the best diets for teen girls to stay slim is vegetarianism. While the diet is healthy and l0w calorie, supplements need to be taken to compensate for low amounts of essentials such as Iron.
If you or your teen is overweight, don’t follow any diets for overweight teens that involve near starvation. Once again, this will only lead to the yo yo cycle, burning fat rapidly, then coming right back on twofold when you deter from the diet plan.
Other extreme forms of dieting involves using laxatives - steer clear of this also, as most weight lost will be water, which is unhealthy and only short term.
